Matthew 25:31-46 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left… 46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
At one time or another, everyone who hopes to be in heaven after they die wonders whether they have done enough to get there. Have I done the right things? Have I done enough of them? Is my faith “real enough” faith to gain the eternal life that Jesus promises to those who trust him?
We wrestled with this question last week on one of Jesus’ more shocking teachings. The highlights are below. You can catch the full lesson at www.parkviewfamily.com. The key passage is Matthew 25:31-46.
First We See that Eternal Life Requires a Faith Response to Jesus.
Matthew 25:34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
A key difference between the sheep and goats in this lesson is their response to Jesus. It is so obvious that it is easy to miss. Fact both the sheep and goat miss it. On the surface it looks like Jesus contradicts himself by saying they are invited to enter kingdom based on their care of the needy. BUT he sees their care of the needy as an actual response to Himself.
On the Flip-side We See that Eternal Punishment Results from Failing to Respond to Jesus.
Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
John 3:18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Jesus notes here that their failure to care for those in need around them was really a failure to see and respond to Jesus himself! Shocking. So ultimately He teaches that all people are judged based on their response to Jesus.
The Big Point then is that A Genuine Faith Response to Jesus Produces His Love for Others in You.
2Corinthians 5:15 and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.
John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Real faith in Jesus makes a real impact in life & relationships. We learn here that faith in Jesus is not simply agreement with a religious statement. It is so entrusting your life to Jesus as the True Son of God that we actually follow His lead in our lives. We literally sign ownership of our lives over to him so that He lives in us. We respond to Him.
SO… What about you? Have your Embraced Jesus with Genuine Life-Altering Faith. Are you ready for His return?
John 10:27-28 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish;
Matt 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
