Matthew 25:14-30 “For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey… 19 “Now after a long time the master of those slaves *came and *settled accounts with them.
Followers of Jesus believe He will return to give us eternal life in His kingdom. But what does it look like to be ready for His return? How does Jesus want us to live while we wait for that moment? Does how we live before Jesus’ returns matter? What are we supposed to do with the life God has given us? We took a look at those questions this past weekend.
In Matthew 24-25 Jesus teaches what to expect before his return. He also talks about the importance of being ready for it before it happens and what that looks like. In the parable of the talents he contrasts readiness with failure to be ready. Here is some of what we learned
BOTTOM LINE: Jesus Gives Us the Chance to Handle Kingdom Treasure and Holds Us Accountable for What We Do with It!
Matthew 25:29 “For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30 Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
There are some core points illustrated in Jesus’ story. A talent is part of the immeasurable wealth of the master. Different people are given different measures. Jesus has the same core expectation for each. All are accountable for what they do with what they have received. The difference in where the characters end up tells us this is about MORE than what you do with your amazing singing voice. It should also motivate us to make sure we get on the right side of this thing. We do that the following two ways.
First Embrace the Kingdom Treasure Jesus has Given You
1Thes 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
TRUTH: Jesus’ kingdom treasure is the truth of the gospel and the opportunities to embrace it. The first two servants “immediately” receive the treasure and put it to work. The third handles it as little as possible. He buries it effectively putting it out of sight- out of mind. This is what too many do with the core message of Jesus about sin, eternal life and the one way to enter His kingdom. Romans 1 in the Bible says that even though people have the correct information about God, they intentionally suppress is because of their greater sinful desires. That road leads to eternal tragedy.
Jesus makes it clear that to enter the masters joy and experience even greater treasure begins by properly receiving the treasure He allows you to handle here. That means genuine faith in Jesus as presented in the Bible.
GUT CHECK: Have you really embraced His Kingdom treasure?
Then, Let Jesus’ Kingdom Treasure Work through You for His Purpose.
John 7:38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
A second thing Jesus’ story makes clear is that He intends for His kingdom treasure to grow through His servants. The first two are not in competition with each other. Both are equally affirmed by the master because they put the treasure to work and let it grow. The third just didn’t. Because he buried it without even handling it the treasure had not chance of growth through his life.
This part of the story reveals much. First there is an undeniable connection between genuine faith in Jesus and the life impact that results. It is different in different people. Different levels, different scope, different impact but the same quality and direction. In other words real faith makes a real impact in real life.
GUT CHECK: What are you doing to let His Kingdom treasure grow? Jesus’ return will be amazing IF you are ready. How ready are you?
