Matthew 24:3 As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
The end of the world is an odd thing to think about. I’m not sure we think about it in a real way for very long. These days we mostly focus on it only as entertainment I read recently that the first end of the world movie was a 1916 Danish film called, The End of the World. It featured a near-miss by a comet which triggers worldwide natural disasters and social upheaval. There wasn’t another one until the 1950’s. It’s kind of exploded since then.
This makes you wonder if there is something deep in our soul that knows there must be an end to our story. At least this part of it. As followers of Jesus we learn of His promise to return physically to earth to set everything right including a final judgment that separates people eternally to heaven or hell as His kingdom asserts itself fully over all humanity by doing away with sin. Sounds scary doesn’t it. No wonder we don’t want to think about it seriously. But what if it’s true? Wouldn’t you want to be prepared for that moment in advance? That is why we are looking more closely at Jesus’ teaching on this topic.
Last week we looked at Jesus teaching on the general description of the final age before the end and what our attitudes should be as we live through it. Here is the summary of what we saw in Matthew 24:1-14:
- False saviors & spiritual leaders will rise. SO… Don’t be fooled by false voices.
- Wars & disasters will increase. SO… Don’t be startled by wars & disasters
- Persecution & betrayal will grow. SO…Continually deepen your faith in Jesus.
- Spiritual darkness will grow in human hearts & broader cultures. SO… Embrace Jesus’ mission of sharing the good news of His Kingdom. See Acts 1:6-8
BOTTOM LINE: Continue to Live Out your Faith in Jesus in the Face of Growing Deception, Global Difficulty and Spiritual Opposition.
Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you… See that you are not frightened… 13 But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. 14 This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
This weekend He gets more specific about the final moments before His return. He tells us this so those on earth then can recognize what is happening AND more importantly all of us can deepen our faith in Him with true perspective of the bigger picture.
Be sure to read Matthew 24:15-31 and then join us this weekend as we dig in on what Jesus wants His followers to know about His return to finalize His Kingdom on earth. If you have missed you can catch the full lessons at www.parkviewfamily.com.
