Psalm 19:1-2 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Psalm 19:7-11 The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. 10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward.
I still remember the shock of it. My first day in a required religion class at a church sponsored liberal arts college rattled my cage. The warm & kind professor acknowledged that many of us grew up learning the Bible and being told we could trust it as ultimate truth. He then told us it was time to set that aside as he dropped a large copy of God’s word in the trash can. The rest of the semester he repeatedly sought to demonstrate how the knowledge of modern man has shown the deep errors, false assumptions and inconsistencies of the Bible. While it was sickening to my stomach in the end my soul was strengthened with greater faith in the reliability of God’s word than before. I wish I could say the same for my classmates and for all such unsuspecting students who face this kind of arrogant, dishonest academic bullying.
What if human sciences along with history, literature, archeology actually demonstrate the incredible truthfulness of the Bible as God’s Word.
That professor and others typically present a one-sided case for why the Bible is only a flawed human document with no more inspiration than any other piece of great literature. They rarely show the verifiably valid evidence that affirm its singular uniqueness among all written works and the real possibility that if true (which evidence supports), it points to an ultimate Creator & Redeemer who offers life to all who embrace Him in faith.
Consider for a moment that both the creation of God and the Word of God are in complete agreement in revealing the ultimate truths of God. If so, then true human sciences will confirm the ultimate truths of His word. What if it is not our knowledge but our willfulness that casts doubt?
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
Psalm 19 is a beautiful psalm that highlights God’s revelation of Himself through both creation and written word. Both reveal Him. Creation reveals his existence and the powerful, brilliant, relational aspects of His being. His written word is specifically designed to help humanity understand His purpose of bringing us out of our darkness and into the light of His life. Without God’s help, we will continue to stumble. If we embrace His existence and purpose as revealed in His word, then we can experience the restoration, wisdom, joy and protection promised in Psalm 19 and much, much more.
What do you think? Does the word of God still have value for today? What kind of value? How influenced have you been by those who claim that human understanding is now so great that we can discard what was once believed to be an actual message from God? What if human sciences along with history, literature, archeology actually demonstrate the incredible truthfulness of the Bible as God’s Word. Join us this weekend as we take a closer look at these questions along with Proverbs 30 and Psalm 119.
