Psalm 119:160 The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.
Each year the Bible remains the top of the bestselling books in the western world. Yet from the condition of our societies, I don’t think we are really buying it. Throughout history it has been the most studied, most criticized, most neglected, most loved and yet most socially controversial book of all.
The world doubts, downplays & distorts its nature in a wide variety of ways. We are in an age where it is mocked by some, ignored by most, distorted, reinterpreted or treated like a cafeteria buffet by others seeking to remain religious without really following it. Few people really embrace the Bible as truth. Most have questions. What is it really? Where does it come from? What difference does it make?
The first seeds of darkness in the Bible begin with Satan casting doubt on God’s Words, “Did God really say…?” All of this begs the question of why it should be trusted as a foundational guide for anyone’s life. Why should I trust it?!
Understanding the true nature of the Bible is one of the most important parts of the Christian faith outside of the Jesus Himself. Answering the question of the Bible’s source is the starting point.
The Bible Claims to be God’s Intentional Message to Humanity about Real Life through Jesus.
2Tim 3:14-17 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Look closely at the verses from 2Timothy 3 above. Its source is God. Its focus is Jesus. Its purpose is life through faith in Jesus. It both leads us to eternal life in Jesus and helps us learn to live it out here and now. That is an incredible claim.
If God is the source of the Bible, then it’s content, purpose and nature rest on His integrity & identity. If He is its source then it carries His authority. We understand this principle. Politicians and media outlets quote sources constantly. When they make points about positions or opinions they point to polls or experts as authorities on the topic at hand. We recognize that what is shared is only as valid as the authority & integrity of the source behind it.
There are repeated example of God speaking to one of the prophets and calling them to write down what He says. The Bible is the result of their obedience to His direction. Of course there is mystery to the process, yet the simplified principle is clear. 2Peter 1 tells us the Holy Spirit moved on those God led to record His specific communication to humanity.
That means that we have a clear message from God meant to give us life! But it can only help if we embrace it.
2Pet 1:19-21 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
If the Bible is God’s Message to us, THEN…
- We can trust its truthfulness, character & authority though we are imperfect students of it.
- We can experience its life changing benefits & purpose by digesting and practicing it daily.
- Our destiny can be secured by meeting & trusting the Savior that it leads us to eternal life.
My Hope is that You Will Embrace the Bible as God’s True Authoritative Message for Your Life.
1Thes 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
My hope is that you will Embrace it as God’s word for you. Not a blind faith but a confident conviction lived out in your daily life. Here are some questions for you to consider:
Are you open to the possibility that the Bible might actually be God’s’ direct message to you about finding real life in Jesus? Are you open enough to take a look?
Are you a follower of Jesus? Do you really embrace it as Gods’ word? ALL OF IT?! What parts do you ignore, reject, redefine? What source of truth do you value MORE than His word?
