How will You Decide Part 2

How should Christ followers decide their vote? This was the question we wrestled with last weekend. In case you missed it the key thoughts are below: As always you can hear the whole lesson at www.parkviewfamily.com.

Nearly all believers are discouraged, frustrated, disheartened and even disgusted by the available options for this presidential election. Some feel that a real believer can’t vote for either major candidate. Other feel just as strongly that a true believer MUST vote for the lesser of two evils. Each of us is responsible for our own decision.

Here are two filters and one critical action to help you make up your mind.

Choose the Person Who Best Reflects Jesus’ Kingdom.

Dt. 1:13 Choose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’

Exodus 18:21 Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.

Too often we make our decision based on lessor things. Perceived strength and competence can be good. Inflated promises & inflated egos however lead too many astray. We must start by considering the character of those we vote for.

Many candidates claim to believe in Jesus. Their track records however give very little evidence to support it. A real relationship with Jesus should make a real impact on a person’s life beginning with their character. Ideal leaders honor God in their lives & leadership.

Choose the Direction that Best Fits Jesus’ Kingdom Values.

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

John 16:13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.

Too often we vote based on gut instinct and feeling. We need to look at the real facts of a candidates positions & values. These will shape their decisions under pressure. We need to assess their position with Jesus’ core values as shown in His Word.

By definition, true followers of Christ surrender their own authority over

deciding what is right & wrong and takes direction from Him. A follower embraces Jesus’ definitions of right, wrong, marriage, mercy, sin & life. As much as possible our votes should reflect Jesus’ values.

Intensely Seek God’s Wisdom for How You Should Choose.

James 1:5-8 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Cf. 6-7

1Samuel 16:3 You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.”

Admittedly the above filters may not help as much as we like in this election. But we have an ultimate fall back. We can simply ask Jesus for wisdom. Knowing there is no perfect candidate unless Jesus is on the ballot and that God often allowed ungodly leaders for a season for a purpose, we can seek His will for this moment in time. Continually, intentionally pray asking Him to show you how decide your vote with a willingness to trust His purpose and direction.
