In this series we learned how we choose joy no matter what we face. Last weekend’s lesson flipped the script.
Proverbs 10:1 notes that “a wise son gives joy to his father, but a foolish one brings grief to his mother.” The question of the week is IF we are in fact God’s kids, do we give Him joy? While there are several ways mentioned in the Bible, the letter to the Philippians closes with three. Check them out and see how you are doing.
1. God has Joy When We Give to Share in Jesus’ Ongoing Mission.
Philippians 4:15-17 You yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone; 16 for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs. 17 Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek for the profit which increases to your account.
Giving to Jesus’ mission is a good work God remembers & rewards! We tend to fund our own personal missions & passions first. But we become part of Jesus’ mission when we give to support it. We share the profit of Jesus’ mission when we invest in it. Churches that give beyond themselves are rare. Churches that give beyond themselves gain spiritual benefit while giving God joy!
2. God has Joy When We Actually Give Out of Love for Him.
Philippians 4:18 But I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God.
2Corinthians 9:7 Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
TRUTH: Generosity toward God pleases Him deeply. It is a way to show our love, gratitude, and value of Him. For good or bad the primary ways we assign value in our world is through money & time… ranger from worthless to priceless. It is not our words but our sacrifice that shows the true value we assign!
3. God has Joy When Our Giving Shows a Deepening Faith in Him.
Philippians 4:19-20 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen
2Cor 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;
TRUTH: Giving is proof of a maturing faith in Jesus. God gave Adam & Eve everything they could ever need. They wanted MORE! How did that turn out? Deepened trust & commitment to His mission bring God joy. Giving in Christ builds spiritual muscle, increases spiritual impact & reward. We trust him for eternal life why not for daily bread.
BOTTOM LINE: Our Giving Pleases God When it Demonstrates Our Hearts Growing Closer to His.
