In the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan powerfully and graphically imagines what the D-Day invasion must have been like. People falling all over the beach in the water. That is what is going on spiritually around each of us.
People are dying spiritually all around us. How are we going to impact them? How can we best help others discover a deepening relationship with Jesus? How does what we do together & how we relate together accomplish that? ANSWER: We must live out the gospel sacrificially in our daily lives with faith that keeps us from grumbling and arguing in ways that hurt the gospel. Last weekend’s lesson focused on three important ways we do that.
Live Like You Believe the Core Salvation You Have in Jesus.
Phil. 2:12-18 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
It is important to understand what this does & does not mean. It is NOT earning salvation or favor.
It is NOT maintaining saved condition. It is intentionally learning to live the present reality of ultimate spiritual condition.
If you are already saved… you have the light of Christ in you. So let it work & let it out. Listen to God’s spirit within you, look to His playbook- word often and keep working it out, getting it right, getting it better.
Don’t Let Complaining & Arguing Darken Christ’s Light in Your Life.
Phil 2:14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing; 15 so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.
TRUTH: Believers’ relationships impact Christ’s witness. Grumbling and fighting hurts believers’ witness. Your words reveal your spiritual condition at that moment: gripe, grumble, fussing, gossiping or encouragement, patience and gentle correction? True Christian’s lives should be different from the culture we live in. impacted by but set free from. Lives should be a holy influence. We turn up Jesus’ light when we follow His instruction without making a fuss about opinions, preferences & secondary things.
Embrace the Joy of Sacrificial Living that Moves Others Forward in Jesus.
Phil 2:17 But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. 18 You too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.
Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
In his book, Colors of Hope, Richard Dahlstrom writes, “[The safety-first posture] is wrong on several levels. First, and most significantly, the good life is never defined by Jesus in terms of either length or comfort. To the contrary, Jesus says that those who seek to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their lives, spilling them out generously in service to others because of love for God and humanity, will find them.”
TRUTH: Believers’ lives are one long sacrifice to move others forward in Christ.
