Choosing Joy Together

Standard

celebrating peopleThis past Sunday we learned how to Choose Joy with our spiritual family when faced with persecution. Here are the highlights…

In Paul’s day believers were facing strong cultural pushback. The Roman citizens of Philippi felt that Christian’s faith was incompatible with Roman citizenship. It was a threat to their preferred way of life. They were also facing the fruit of selfishness within the body. Look what they learned about finding joy together.

The Secret of Soul Deep Joy

Standard

praying girlThis past weekend we looked at the secret of soul deep joy even when things are hard. Sometimes I think we miss joy because we are looking in the wrong place. Joy has a source. When your source of joy is more powerful than any circumstance your joy can endure through any circumstance.

WHAT IS JOY? It is the deep feeling of confident hope that comes when the priority focus of your heart is secure. Think about it. When the thing you value the most is doing well you have joy no matter what else is happening.

Ps 16:8 I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Choose Joy When God’s Work Moves Forward through Your Hardship.

Phil 1:12-14 “Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel…”

Paul rejoices that the gospel is spreading and changing lives through his imprisonment and calls others to embrace his attitude during such times as well. God really is able to work through our hardship!

GUT CHECK: If you had to choose between avoiding a serious hardship and making a greater impact for Christ what would you do?

Choose Joy When Jesus’ Message Spreads through Unwanted Rivals

Phil. 1:15-18 Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife… 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice.

God can use flawed people to advance his mission. He uses us doesn’t he? Paul doesn’t like the sinful attitude and spiritual immaturity of some who are competing with him. But he celebrates that the gospel is spreading even through such people.

GUT CHECK: How do you feel if another ministry takes off when yours is flat?

Choose Joy When God Leaves You to Serve When it Isn’t What You Wanted Most.

Phil. 1:21-26 “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose…”

When we share Jesus’ heart for people we take joy in sacrificing for their ultimate benefit.

GUT CHECK: What is your source of joy? Really?

BOTTOM LINE: Attach your Joy to Jesus & His Mission Not to Your Immediate Condition.

Choosing Joy in Frustrating Relationships

Standard

choose joy promo 02Ever have a day you wish you stayed in bed. Things started out challenging and went uphill all day long. Every wished someone stayed in bed? Some people can be really frustrating/ challenging. The closer they are to you the more frustrating they become.

This happens in our spiritual family as well. What should be source of great joy sometimes brings disappointment, frustration or even hurt. In last weeks message we learned about How can we find joy in our spiritual family when part of them are frustrating us? Here is the core outline. If you want to grab the whole message just go to our website at http://www.parkviewfamily.com/#/welcome/listen-to-sermons

Ps 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity!

1. Remember You Are on the Same Team!

Phil 1:3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, 5 in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.

Col 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful Eph 4:4., Rom 12:5 & Jn 17:23

In Christ we are really all on the same team. American individualism tends to think only about me perhaps my immediate family. Anything that gets in the way of that annoys us. What if the annoyance is intended for our good.. to make us better. Thank God for your teammates even when they confronts, challenge, aggravate or frustrate you.

2. Believe that Jesus is Still at Work in Each of You!

Phil. 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Phil 2:13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure 1Thes 2:13

No follower of Christ is perfect but ALL are being changed for the better. Think for a minute. Are you are exactly the same today as you were ten years ago? Why not? Are there areas of your life you still wish would change? We are all still under construction. Some of us still need that caution tape to warn others!

3. Let Christ’s Love Mature & Overflow in You.

Phil. 1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; 11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God

1Tim 1:5 But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

Growth in holy love is God’s ultimate priority for believer’s relationships. Jesus said loving God and others is the most important thing in life. What if those challenging relationship are our greatest opportunity to grow up in how we do that?
